Many Hackers prefer to use crypto because of its anonymity as converting money to crypto, sending, and receiving doesn’t require the use of a legal name or address. For this reason, at the time of acquiring untraceable funds, hackers use crypto in general. The same type of cryptocurrency fraud happened in Russia. Anonymous hackers sold the data of over 129 million Russian car owners on the darknet in the exchange of crypto. Russian news agency RBC has reported
the illicit incident recently. According to the news, the leaked data contained the name, passport numbers, address, and other personal data of Russian car drivers.
Russian local publication Vedomosti published the news about cryptocurrency fraud at first. Furthermore, an employee of a local car-sharing company confirmed the legitimacy of the stolen information. The data was hacked from the registry of Russia’s patrol jurisdiction, the General Administration for Traffic Safety of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia. The volume of darknet market crypto flows has increased twice in the last year and an increase in illicit activity on darknet markets.
Cybercriminals Activity on Darknet markets
Hackers are selling data at really cheap rates with the exchange of crypto. For example, the full version of the database 129 million car owners sold at 0.3 BTC. It is equal to $2,842.93 at the time of reporting. Another example is selling 500,000 accounts of the Zoom app. Hackers sold those huge numbers of accounts for less than a penny per account. But sometimes the cost of losing data is intimidating. For example, Trident Crypto suffered a major loss when cybercriminals theft 266,000 usernames and passwords.
However, as mentioned before, the volume of cybercrime or illicit activity on darknet markets have been increased. Also, cybercriminals are using various tactics in cryptocurrency fraud thus opening up a huge gateway for cryptocurrency scams. The increase in volume reported earlier by Chainalysis, a New York-based blockchain analytics firm. Sometimes, these Cryptocriminals are also exposing data without taking money in darknet.
