On stage, the boxer was knocked out.

Floyd Mayweather didn’t seem to get the notice that he was speaking at a “Bitcoin only” event.

Taking the stage on Day 1 of the Bitcoin 2021 conference in Miami, the boxer minimised the significance of the world’s largest cryptocurrency, frequently encouraged audience members to trust in themselves rather than any one cryptocurrency unit.

Mayweather and his team made a faux pas by donning t-shirts promoting EthereumMax, a new Ethereum-based currency that is sponsoring Mayweather’s bout with Logan Paul on Sunday night.

“Everybody in the crypto world is competing with one another, whereas I feel like everybody should be able to choose what they want to choose and go with who they want to go with,” he said. “I believe there’s gonna be another cryptocurrency just as large as Bitcoin some day,” said Mayweather. (Could he be referring to EthereumMax?)

That response drew boos from a crowd that had greeted him with a standing ovation.

The undefeated (50-0) fighter defended himself by saying, “Without no cryptocurrency, I was able to make a billion dollars. With or without any cryptocurrency, Floyd Mayweather’s going to be okay.”

He then sidestepped a question from interviewer Tracy Leparulo about athletes taking bonuses and accepting payment in Bitcoin.

“I would never tell anyone what to do, what to invest in,” he said.

That’s not quite accurate, for reasons other than his t-shirt/sponsorship and his new line of NFTs—blockchain-based tokens that show ownership over things, in this instance digital memorabilia.

In 2018, Mayweather and DJ Khaled were accused with failing to disclose that they had been paid to promote Centra Tech’s initial coin offering. The project’s creator is currently serving an eight-year prison sentence.

Mayweather agreed to a $614,775 penalty and disgorgement settlement with the SEC. He was also barred from advertising securities for three years, which he is currently subject to.

While the Securities and Exchange Commission, at least under previous Chairman Jay Clayton, has consistently said that Bitcoin is not a security, Mayweather was not in a rush to promote it, scarcely mentioning BTC in his interview.

The organisers of the Bitcoin 2021 conference have made it quite apparent that the meeting is intended to be about, well, Bitcoin. They announced on Telegram in the run-up to the meeting, “This is a Bitcoin only conference.” Please be attentive and on topic during the event. Conversations concerning alternative protocols and cryptocurrencies should be reserved for after the conference.”

Mayweather is unbeaten in the ring, but he’s 0-1 when it comes to Bitcoiners.
